Efficiency Initiative

For over a century, Washington University in St. Louis has been committed to a legacy of learning through research and teaching. We are developing future leaders and helping to solve the world’s most difficult problems.

Like other universities across the country, the 2012-14 environment for research and higher education was challenging. In order to fulfill our mission, we had to stay focused on maintaining and securing our long-term financial health.

In 2013, the Huron Consulting Group was engaged to conduct an assessment of the potential for cost savings and improved efficiency. Huron’s assessment confirmed that there are opportunities to maintain our quality of service, but with greater efficiency and at reduced costs.

In a message to the Washington University community, Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton shared the importance of coming together on this issue. In a follow-up message, Executive Vice Chancellor for Administration Hank Webber provided additional details on the ongoing efficiency efforts.

This efficiency initiative will require a long-term focus and the participation of everyone in the Washington University community.
