Built in 1901, the power plant was one of the first buildings on the Washington University in St. Louis Danforth Campus.
The primary architects of the power plant were Cope and Stewardson.
The building was used by the Louisiana Purchase Exposition from 1902-05. In 1925 it was renovated, at which time the smoke stack was added.
